Electoral Violence: Violence Against Women

Ironically, a rally, which was intended to address peace issues, landed six women in police custody for some few hours. The Guardian reported incidents of what appears to be violence against women (VAW) through arbitrary arrest of six women who were heading to a campaign rally organised by the wife of one of the presidential candidate Mama Regina Lowassa. According to sources, the organisers had informed the police of this rally which was intended to address peace. Six women dressed in CHADEMA attire and carrying Lowassa poster were arrested and few hours later released on bail. This arbitrary arrest of citizens targeting women is a signal that some police officers are not acting impartially; it might be sending unnecessary panic messages to voters and particularly women
