On Monday 12, October, the Nation Electoral Commission (NEC) released thefinal list of voters which left out more than a million registered voters. Issuing the statement, the Director of Elections Mr. Ramadhani Kailima said 181,452 were removed because of double registrations, 854,944 were practicum BVR registrars (i.e. those who were registered during the training sessions), and 3,870 were migrants who were registered illegally.
Amongst CEMOT’s major objectives is to improve citizens’ engagement with the electoral management bodies and relevant authorities to deliver reliable feedback and timely responses. On the 5th of October 2015, CEMOT received information from one of its Long Term Observers (LTO) in Kigoma North that more about 200 non- Tanzanians were registered in the BVR. The list of the migrants, which was also handled to CEMOT and later submitted to NEC, showed the alleged non-Tanzanians were from Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The quick response of NEC to remove the illegal voters form the register is a commendable step for ensuring credible electoral processes, including enhancing public trust towards NEC.
